IPL hair removal
What Is IPL and How Does It Work?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. IPL is a safe and effective way of removing unwanted hair. Hair growth is reduced and removed by a series of up to 8 treatments using controlled light impulses.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal works by selectively damaging actively growing hair follicles and causing their death. The procedure is suitable for men and women.
What the procedure contains?
- Safety eyewear must be worn to protect your eyes from the light generated by the device
- A gel will be applied to the treated area to soothe and cool the area
- Your therapist will use a hand piece to touch your skin with flashes of light
- The hand piece crystal is cooled to prevent the skin overheating when the pulse is fired
- Most people feel a little warmth in the area, while some feel a slight ‘nip’ sensation. The overall feeling is so light that the IPL laser may be used on almost any part of the body.
How fast is the treatment?
Large numbers of hair can be destroyed at a time. For example the upper lip may take only a couple minutes to cover, while two full legs may take up to an hour. Time also needs to be spent preparing your skin prior to the light therapy and properly tending to it after the session.
What can I expect to see after a session?
The ‘best’ results appear after the second session because at this stage we’ve managed to catch a lot of the hair in it’s growth phase. Also, because the hair doesn’t immediately fall out after each session – it can take between five days and three weeks depending on the hair. Three to four weeks break between sessions to maximise the new hair growth is recommended.
What skin or hair colour are suitable for procedure?
IPL works for most skin tones and hair colours, although brown and black hair provide the fastest results. We will tell you if IPL hair removal is not for you at your initial consultation and patch test.
I couldn’t make my last appointment. Is this a problem?
It is important to try and not miss any of your appointments so that your treatment is effective and your treatment plan not unnecessarily prolonged as the hair can only be treated when it is at the growth phase.
If you miss an appointment, the hair which is in the growth phase will carry on its natural growth cycle. This means it will grow and naturally shed. You will not be able to treat the hair that was missed until it is again in the growth phase some 11 months later.
